Green candidates in May elections for Kirklees Council recorded some stunning victories and a near miss.
In Crosland Moor & Netherton ward, Alex Vickers was elected by a majority of 354 and a vote share of 41%. In 2023 she came second. Her victory in 2024 was the result of having undertaken a great deal of local casework and becoming a regular sight in the ward.
In Newsome ward, Andrew Cooper recorded the largest majority in the town, taking a 67% share of the votes cast. He was re-elected for the seventh time, having first become a councillor in 1999.
In Greenhead ward, Maryam Jawaid came within 41 votes of beating sitting Labour councillor Sheik Ullah. Maryam organised an energetic campaign involving many local people so helping pave the way for a general election campaign.
Overall, in Huddersfield constituency the Green Party share of the vote was only 3% behind Labour’s.
